Louis Vuitton Speedy Buying Guide: Sizes, Bandoulière, Canvases and What to Check
TrueFacet Holiday Shops Sale

The Louis Vuitton Speedy is one of the most recognizable handbags ever made: a soft, barrel-shaped top-handle bag with rolled leather handles, a zip top and a small padlock. It has been in production for almost a century, it comes in more sizes and materials than most buyers realize, and it is one of the most popular Louis Vuitton bags on the pre-owned market. This Louis Vuitton Speedy buying guide covers the bag’s history, the sizes from Nano to 40, the Speedy versus the Speedy Bandoulière, the main canvases, and what to check before you buy one pre-owned.

A Quick Background

The Speedy started life as a travel bag. Louis Vuitton launched it in 1930 under the name “Express,” as a compact, soft-sided companion that was roomier than a clutch but far more agile than a trunk, and its rolled leather Toron handles let it be flattened and packed inside a larger suitcase (Louis Vuitton). Its inspiration was the larger Keepall, introduced in 1924 (WWD). The first Speedy was offered in a 30 cm size in plain canvas, and it was produced in Monogram canvas the following year; 35 cm and 40 cm sizes followed as demand grew (Sotheby’s, Vogue).

The bag’s best-known story dates to 1965, when Audrey Hepburn asked the house for a smaller version to suit her frame. The result was the Speedy 25, which remains one of the most sought-after sizes today (Sotheby’s, Louis Vuitton).

Speedy Sizes: Nano, 25, 30, 35 and 40

The number in a Speedy’s name is its width in centimeters (WWD). Louis Vuitton describes five primary sizes today: the Nano, 25, 30, 35 and 40 (Louis Vuitton).

  • Nano: a miniature version that works more like an accessory or evening bag than an everyday carryall. Sotheby’s notes the Nano is a revival of the smaller Speedy styles the house has offered over the years (Sotheby’s).
  • Speedy 25: the Hepburn size. Louis Vuitton describes it as fitting a wallet, phone, small camera, sunglasses and a thin book, which makes it a practical city bag for most people (Louis Vuitton).
  • Speedy 30: the original size, and according to WWD still the most popular (WWD). It holds a bit more than the 25 without becoming a tote.
  • Speedy 35 and 40: the larger sizes, closer to the bag’s travel roots. They work well as weekend or work bags but can feel bulky for everyday use.

If you carry a tablet or a lot of daily essentials, a 30 or 35 is usually the safer choice. If you mostly carry a wallet, phone and keys, the 25 is lighter and easier to manage. Because the Speedy is soft-sided, it slouches as it is filled, so a fuller bag looks smaller than the measurements suggest.

Speedy vs. Speedy Bandoulière

The classic Speedy is a top-handle bag only. In 2011 Louis Vuitton introduced the Speedy Bandoulière (“bandoulière” means “with a strap” in French), which adds a detachable shoulder strap so the bag can be worn on the shoulder or crossbody, plus a two-way zipper and extra leather strips with D-rings along the sides (WWD, Sotheby’s).

For most buyers this is the biggest decision after size. The Bandoulière is more versatile and is the version Louis Vuitton features most prominently today, while the classic Speedy has a simpler, cleaner look that many vintage collectors prefer. A classic Speedy cannot simply be converted into a Bandoulière, because it lacks the side D-rings, so if you know you want hands-free carry, shop for a Bandoulière from the start.

Canvases and Materials

The Speedy has been made in a long list of materials. Beyond the classic Monogram canvas, you will find it in Damier Ebene, Damier Azur, Monogram Empreinte leather and Epi leather, along with many artist collaborations and limited editions over the years (Sotheby’s).

  • Monogram canvas: the classic. The trim and handles are typically untreated natural cowhide (vachetta), which darkens to a honey patina with use. Some buyers love that patina, while others prefer a bag where the leather is still pale. Either is normal, but check for water spots, dark stains or cracking.
  • Damier Ebene: a brown checkerboard canvas with darker brown trim. It is a popular choice for buyers who want a lower-maintenance bag, since the darker leather shows wear less than vachetta.
  • Damier Azur: a light cream and gray-blue checkerboard. It looks fresh but shows dirt and color transfer from clothing more easily.
  • Leather versions (Empreinte, Epi): sturdier and dressier, and usually priced higher than canvas versions.

Our Louis Vuitton Neverfull buying guide covers vachetta patina and canvas care in more detail, and the same advice applies to the Speedy.

What to Check Before Buying a Pre-Owned Speedy

  • Canvas construction: the Speedy’s body is cut from one continuous piece of canvas, so the Monogram pattern appears upside down on one side of the bag (Sotheby’s). That is correct, not a defect. The pattern should also line up neatly at the seams.
  • Date code or microchip: Louis Vuitton began phasing out stamped date codes around March 2021 and replacing them with an embedded RFID/NFC microchip (Collector’s Cage). On older Speedys the code is usually stamped on a leather tab inside the bag (Sold Attire). Neither a date code nor a chip proves authenticity on its own, since both can be copied, and no public app verifies a bag by scanning its chip (Collector’s Cage). Treat them as era clues, not proof.
  • Handles and trim: look at the handle edges and where the handles meet the bag. Cracked edge paint, tears or heavy darkening at the tabs may mean repairs are coming.
  • Shape and corners: check the bottom corners for rubbing or holes and the canvas for cracking along fold lines, especially on older bags that have been stored flattened.
  • Zipper and hardware: the zipper should run smoothly from end to end, and the padlock and keys should be present if the listing says so. Ask whether a Bandoulière’s strap is the original.
  • Interior: check the lining for stains, odors or stickiness, and look for any mismatched repairs.

Which Speedy Is Right for You?

If you want the iconic, timeless version, a Monogram Speedy 25 or 30 is the easiest place to start. If you want an everyday bag you can wear hands-free, choose a Speedy Bandoulière in the same sizes. If you want something that hides wear and needs less babying, look at Damier Ebene. The larger 35 and 40 make the most sense if you want a travel or weekend bag with the Speedy look.
