A Pencil For Freedom

“The pen is mightier than the sword.”

In the wake of the January 2015 terrorist attack at the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, a French satirical magazine, the city adopted this proverb in response to what was considered a violent attempt to stifle the controversial magazine and the greater free press. This rallying cry was adopted by supporters of freedom of speech and the press who refused to be intimidated into silence.

The Expression founder and lead designer Zuri Mesica was in Paris during the shocking attack. He was profoundly moved by the response of the public, who showed their support with powerful, defiant, and politically-charged sketches. One particular image that resonated with Mesica was the Je suis Charlie fist: a raised fist clutching a pencil, a symbol of solidarity and resistance in the face of violence.

Pencils of Promise

The Expression donates a portion of its sales to the humanitarian group Pencils of Promise. The global organization builds schools, trains teachers and funds scholarships for underserved areas to give students access to high quality learning environments. To date, Pencils of Promise has opened 418 schools around the world which currently educate over 72,000 students.
