Roberto Coin’s Barocco Collection: A Modern Revival

Roberto Coin’s jewelry is renowned for its alluring femininity and its unshakeable roots in Italian art, architecture, and history. The lively spirit and fluid structure of Roberto Coin pieces embody the colorful and vivacious energy that runs deep within the culture of Italy.

However, Coin’s pieces do not simply pay homage to the culture that inspires their designs: they are also incredibly diverse, rendering them remarkably stylistically flexible. These pieces can play the centerpiece to any jewelry collection in the world.

Nevertheless, one Roberto Coin collection truly rises above the rest. We’re taking you inside the Barocco collection, its modern descendant, and the amazing artisanal technique that unites the two.

Roman Barocco: The Original

The most popular collection of Coin’s arrangement of designs is undoubtedly the Roman Barocco collection. Named after the Italian word for “Baroque,” this Roberto Coin classic embodies the heavily-detailed, ornamental style of the Baroque era. Roman Barocco pieces are heavily influenced by the cathedrals and religious imagery of Rome, as evinced by the diamond-shaped cage design and the signature twisted thread motif.

The diamond-shaped cutout effect that Roman Barocco pieces demonstrate contributes to the light, airy aesthetic that makes these pieces ultra-wearable. While they have a significant presence on the body, the design is subtle enough so that they don’t overpower the rest of the ensemble. This particular element was inspired by Roman cupolas, which are small towers built on top of buildings to help air circulate, an architectural feature that was developed during the Renaissance.

The twisted thread motif, which is signature to the Barocco collection, brings a remarkable amount of detail and dimension to each Barocco piece. The woven gold evokes early medieval religious art, which was often bordered or ornamented by twisted ropes. This detail is also proof positive of Roberto Coin’s amazing artisanship as a jewelry house: created with longevity in mind, the threads that make up each Barocco piece were welded out of a specially-concocted alloy that becomes remarkably durable once cured in a certain type of oven. The very thin gold threads are artfully twisted together while still malleable after being heated, resulting in a one-of-a-kind design that will last through the ages.

New Barocco: The Evolution

Everything is sleek in the 21st century, including and especially the jewelry. Stackable and customizable rings, bracelets, and necklaces rule the market. The New Barocco collection is Roberto Coin’s response to that trend. The modern descendant of the Roman Barocco, the New Barocco retains the solid roots in Italian heritage but forgoes the complex ornamentation tied to Baroque art in favor of a sleeker silhouette that envelopes more powerful and meaningful symbols into the design, instead.

Characterized by two principal looks, the collection features pieces whose designs incorporate either pavé diamond clusters or Navette-shaped cage effects. Borrowing inspiration from Italian culture and religion like its predecessor, the New Barocco collection marries the complex artistic styles of the 1600s with the pragmatic styles of the modern era.

The pavé diamond clusters are welded together in a dome shape to suggest volume and to make a significant visual impact. Inspired by the domes that sit atop Italian cathedrals, the pavé diamond design is meant to catch the eye, much as the churches do when they stand out against the Roman skyline. The pavé clusters throw impressive halos of light thanks to their many facets, a feat that would not have had the same effect from a single, large stone. Whether the clusters form the center of a statement ring, stations of a necklace, or the primary element of a drop earring, they maintain a unique allure that is the result of the perfect balance between the antique and the modern.

The Navette-shaped cage design, similar to the diamond-shaped design of the Roman Barocco collection, brings levity to the New Barocco pieces. Though it was inspired by the netting in bridal veils, this romantic design element is also evocative of cathedral windows. As some Navette-designed New Barocco pieces also feature several beautiful marquise diamonds, the fire and brilliance thrown by the stones in these pieces of jewelry combine with that elegant shape to conjure the memory of the stained glass that decorates Italy’s churches. And, like in the Roman Barocco collection, the twisted thread motif that makes up the Navette cages calls back to the decorations in religious art. It is this motif that unites the old with the new and shows off the remarkable Roberto Coin craftsmanship that wins the hearts of jewelry enthusiasts everywhere.

The 7 Steps to Building Your Perfect Jewelry Collection

We’ve all read through (and perhaps shopped from) those checklists outlining the “wardrobe workhorses” you need in your closet: a white button up, black slacks, a crisp trench coat. While it is important to have those clothing basics covered, we cannot ignore the importance of adding jewelry to your outfit. Your jewelry choices add those doses of sparkle and polish that tie a look all together and signal that you put thought into your ensemble.

We break down, step-by-step, the pieces you should add to your wardrobe and jewelry collection, in order.

1. Stud Earrings

This small addition to your jewelry collection will have a big impact on your outfit, adding a smart finishing touch that requires no real effort or thought.

Look for a pair that suits your personal style and affixes closely to the ear. We suggest shying away from long or chandelier earrings as your first or go-to pair; these sweeping styles can feel too dramatic for everyday wear.

2. An Everyday Watch

Like the extra shine of earrings, a classic watch makes your outfit feel polished and pulled together—again, with minimal effort. We recommend a clean design with a metal bracelet which is a reliable everyday timepiece that feels professional in the office and not too stuffy for off-duty days.

To help you decide whether you should invest in a white or yellow gold, defer to your favorite handbag’s hardware. If your work tote has gold hardware, opt for a gold watch. If your satchel is covered in silver-brushed studs, go for silver. Really hard-pressed to pick? Go for a two-tone watch and problem solved. Steer clear of styles that have too-colorful dials that may compete with your outfit.

Regardless of which style you pick, ensure that it fits your wrist size correctly. For more on that, check out our handy guide to find the right case size for you.

3. A Delicate Pendant Necklace

Up next on your jewelry checklist: a pendant necklace with sentimental meaning. It is important to pepper your jewelry collection with pieces of personal significance so the collection remains uniquely yours.

Ideally, you want an unobtrusive chain necklace that you can put on and never have to take off. Consider a pendant with your birthstone, a loved one’s initials, or a small charm that recalls a warm memory.

4. A Statement Bracelet or Cuff

As your day-to-day collection comes together, it’s time to add in a few bold pieces to keep things interesting, starting with a statement bracelet or cuff.

We recommend sleek and architectural pieces that add dimension to your evening outfits or punch up your weekend t-shirt-and-jeans. Or, if you love stacking your bracelets, try a handful of bracelets and cuffs that pair well together and have different textures like a charm bracelet, a smooth enamel cuff and a thin chain bracelet.

5. Stack-Friendly Rings

To further personalize your jewelry wardrobe, add in a handful of mix-and-match rings. Look for rings with varying thickness that you can stack up or wear individually. Keep your collection interesting with rings in different metal types, colorful gemstones or pavé stones. The goal here is to have a healthy variety of styles that can throw together to complement (and not overwhelm) the other pieces of jewelry you’re wearing.

6. A Statement Necklace

Like your bold cuff or bracelet, you need a necklace that can spice up a crisp button up or silk blouse. Unlike your dainty pendant necklace which quietly supports an ensemble and style, this necklace should be the focal point of your outfit. You want a stand-out necklace that works with multiple outfits but not one you wear every day. Try a sleek lariat, a chunky chain collar or a long wrap-around necklace with stations.

7. Statement Evening Earrings

Now that your daytime jewelry collection is covered, you’re ready to branch out into evening styles. We recommend starting with chandelier or long earrings as they offer you the style flexibility to work with a variety of necklines and dress styles.

Once you have these core styles covered, do not feel beholden to them forever. Your style will inevitably evolve as your preferences chance. Take regular inventory of what you’re wearing—and what’s collecting dust—and start editing, updating and refreshing your collection accordingly. The joy of a jewelry collection is getting to actually wear it, so make sure your pieces are always a reflection of your unique style.

5 Fashion Week Jewelry Trends

Unfortunately, Fashion Week has drawn to a close. However, that means we can finally round up the best of the jewelry trends from the most fashionable week of the season. Here is a list of 5 of our favorite trends straight off the runway at New York Fashion Week.

1. Bibs and Chokers

J. Crew kept the jewelry fresh and colorful for spring. We loved the bright, floral accent perfect for the bloom of the springtime season. In a start contrast to J. Crew was Pamella Roland. She kept it simple and chic with a thick-banded choker in black. This monochrome effect is great for those who like to avoid the bright colors, but still want to make a statement.

2. Hoop Earrings

Hoop earrings are back! These could be considered statement earrings, but they deserve a category of their own. Rag and Bone went for the classic hoop look in gold. Meanwhile. Derek Lam chose the oversized and wooden-beaded hoops to match their necklace.

3. Asymmetrical Necklaces

These necklaces make a minimalist statement. Jill Stuart and Tory Burch both opted to trade in size and symmetry for a look that’s memorable and understated. We love the asymmetrical look of these two necklaces. The designs are a much-needed update on the classic statement necklace.

4. Earthy Stones

Recently, natural, earthy and rough stones have started to trend. Tory Burch and Michael Kors both combined recent trends with earthy stones for a beautiful effect. Tory Burch used a flat, rock-like stone for a spin on the breastplate necklace. Michael Kors updated the brooch with an earthy-colored, rounded stone.

5. Statement Earrings

The biggest trend of the week was, without question, the statement earrings. It seemed as if every designer had to have their own version of oversized or eye-catching earrings. We loved the modern metal chains worn on the catwalk for Alexander Wang and the simple single earring of the Tibi show.
