When it arrived in 1972, a high-end watch made of steel seemed like a contradiction. Today its octagonal bezel, eight hexagonal screws and “Tapisserie” dial are among the most recognizable designs in watchmaking, and the collection spans everything from slim time-only models to chronographs and perpetual calendars. This Audemars Piguet Royal Oak buying guide walks through the history, the key references, how the 2022 anniversary changes affect what you buy, and what to check before buying pre-owned.

The 1972 Original: Steel Treated Like Gold

According to Audemars Piguet’s own archive history, the Royal Oak began in 1970 when three of the brand’s distributors asked for a steel watch that was both sporty and elegant. Managing director Georges Golay commissioned Gérald Genta, who sketched the design overnight, inspired by a diver’s helmet: an octagonal monocoque case pierced by eight visible screws, a visible water-resistance seal, a dial covered in tiny flattened pyramids and a bracelet evoking the facets of a diamond. Inside was calibre 2121, then the world’s thinnest selfwinding movement, built on an ébauche supplied by LeCoultre. The name came from Italian distributor Carlo de Marchi.

Presented at the Basel Fair in April 1972 as “the most expensive steel watch in the world,” it drew plenty of criticism, yet 490 pieces sold that first year. The first model, reference 5402, measured 39 mm, was water resistant to 100 meters, and was originally planned as a run of 1,000 pieces. It ended up being produced in 6,050 units sold between 1972 and 2002, with yellow gold, white gold and two-tone versions added in 1977 (AP Chronicles).

Why the 39 mm Royal Oak Is Called the “Jumbo”

In the early 1970s most men’s watches were around 35 to 36 mm, so a 39 mm case felt big, which is how the 5402 earned the nickname “Jumbo.” As AP Chronicles explains, the size came from function rather than fashion. The eight screws pass through the whole case and its oversized seal, so they had to sit outside the 28 mm movement, which pushed the diameter out. At only about 7 mm thick, the contrast between that thin profile and the generous width is what made the Royal Oak the original sport-chic watch.

The collection soon grew. Jacqueline Dimier, then head of product design, drew the 29 mm ladies’ model 8638 in 1976 and the 35 mm reference 4100 in 1977 for those who found the Jumbo too large (Audemars Piguet). In 1993 the 42 mm Royal Oak Offshore arrived and helped launch the era of oversized watches; Genta reportedly called it a “sea elephant” (AP Chronicles). We compare the two lines in our guide to the Royal Oak vs. Royal Oak Offshore.

The Key Royal Oak References to Know

The Jumbo: 15202 and 16202

For decades, the 5402’s direct descendants kept calibre 2121. Reference 15202 carried the Jumbo for over 20 years until it was replaced in 2022 by reference 16202 (Hodinkee). The outside stays the same, at 39 mm by 8.1 mm with no seconds hand, but the new calibre 7121 runs at 28,800 vibrations per hour instead of 19,800, raises the power reserve from 40 to 55 hours and adds a quick-set date (Audemars Piguet). Calibre 2121 retired at the end of 2021. In 2022 the 16202 came in steel, pink gold, yellow gold and platinum, and an openworked, date-free version, the 16204, uses the 2.7 mm calibre 7124 (Hodinkee).

The 41 mm Selfwinding: 15400, 15500 and 15510

If you want a more modern size with a central seconds hand, the 41 mm three-hand Royal Oak is the everyday choice. The line started with reference 15400 in 2012, moved to the 15500 in 2019 with the in-house calibre 4302 and its 70-hour power reserve, and then to the 15510 in 2022 (Moda). The 15510 keeps the same case and movement but runs the Grande Tapisserie pattern edge to edge, without the plain minute track of the 15500, and uses slimmer markers and hands. That dial detail is the quickest way to tell the two apart. If a blue-dial steel model is on your list, this Royal Oak with blue dial in stainless steel is a good place to start.

Smaller Sizes and Chronographs

The 2022 update also refreshed the 34, 37, 38 and 41 mm models. The 37 mm references gained the new calibre 5900 with 60 hours of power reserve, replacing calibre 3120, and all 41 mm chronographs moved to the integrated flyback calibre 4401 (Audemars Piguet). Many of these models also carry a new applied 24-carat gold “Audemars Piguet” signature in place of the older AP monogram. For a sportier look on a bracelet, a Royal Oak Chronograph with silver dial pairs the design with a stopwatch function.

What the 2022 Anniversary Means for Buyers

For the 50th anniversary, AP Chronicles notes that all 72 references in production that year received a special “50 years” oscillating weight. Watches made in 2022 with that rotor are a recognizable sub-variant, so check the caseback if you are paying for one. More broadly, 2022 marks a dividing line: pre-2022 references such as the 15202, 15500 and 15400 use earlier dials and, in several cases, earlier movements. Neither generation is “better” by default. Some collectors prefer the vintage character of calibre 2121, while others want the longer power reserve and quick-set date of the newer calibres.

What to Check Before Buying a Pre-Owned Royal Oak

Reference, dial and movement match. Confirm that the full reference on the papers matches the case, the dial pattern and the calibre visible through the caseback. The 15500 and 15510, for example, are easy to confuse in photos.

Papers and box. An original warranty card or certificate, box and documents add confidence and value, and the serial numbers should match the watch.

Case and bracelet finishing. The Royal Oak alternates satin brushing and polished bevels with very sharp edges. Over-polishing rounds those edges and is very hard to reverse, so look closely at the bezel and bracelet links.

Bezel screws. The eight hexagonal screws should be evenly aligned and unmarked. Scratched or misaligned screws can point to amateur work.

Bracelet stretch and links. Check for play in the integrated bracelet and ask whether all removed links are included, since replacement links are costly.

Service history. Ask when the watch was last serviced and by whom. Audemars Piguet or an authorized service center is ideal, especially for thin calibres like the 2121.

Which Royal Oak Is Right for You?

If you want the purest expression of Genta’s design, the 39 mm Jumbo is the reference point, whether a 15202 with its historic calibre or a current 16202. For daily wear with a seconds hand and a bit more presence, the 41 mm 15500 or 15510 is the most versatile choice. Smaller wrists, or anyone who prefers a dressier fit, should try the 34 or 37 mm models, and chronograph fans have the 41 mm flyback. Try the 39 and 41 mm sizes on your wrist if you can, because the integrated bracelet makes the Royal Oak wear larger than its diameter suggests.

For more background, read our facts about the Royal Oak watch and our story on the holy trinity of watchmaking.

Shop the Royal Oak at TrueFacet

Whether you are after a classic Jumbo, a 41 mm everyday model or a chronograph, you can browse our selection of pre-owned Audemars Piguet Royal Oak watches, along with the wider Audemars Piguet collection, all backed by the TrueFacet Authenticity Promise.
